Naruto dreams about becoming Hokage, so he is infuriated when someone ignores and turns down the opportunity. However, when Tsunade is found, she might not be so eager to accept the position due to terrible events in her past. In addition, Jiraiya and Naruto must locate one of Jiraiya's old comrades and another Sannin, Tsunade, the woman chosen to become the Fifth Hokage. The odd ninja pair go on a training trip and new mission where Jiraiya begins to teach Naruto a new advanced jutsu that only Jiraiya and the Fourth Hokage could master - an attack called the Rasengan. Jiraiya is aware of Akatsuki's movement and interest in the young genin Leaf shinobi, Naruto Uzumaki, so Jiraiya continues to take Naruto under his care and tutelage. Itachi and Kisame are both members of the sinister organization known as Akatsuki. The exiled S-rank criminal, Itachi Uchiha, returns to the Leaf in order to capture not Sasuke. The lost brother of Itachi, Sasuke Uchiha's brother, finally makes his long-awaited debut in the Naruto anime series, along with Itachi's partner, Kisame Hoshigake. In the aftermath, a threat even more dangerous than Orochimaru arises.
The Leaf Village weathers the conflict intact, but suffers a great loss in the process.
